LineLayer FAQ

Frequently asked questions about LineLayer

For general questions about phone and call privacy, see the guides. This page covers LineLayer specifically.

Is LineLayer a caller ID or spam-identification app?

No. LineLayer doesn't identify who an unknown caller is, and it doesn't use a crowdsourced database to label numbers as spam. It filters calls based on rules you set — like blocking numbers outside your contacts or numbers you've explicitly blocked — not by looking numbers up.

What happens to calls from numbers that aren't in my contacts?

That depends on the rules you configure. You can choose to block non-contact numbers, allow them, or make exceptions using allow lists and Expected Call Mode for a call you're waiting on.

What is Expected Call Mode?

A way to temporarily relax your relevant filtering rules while you're waiting for a legitimate call from a number you don't recognize, such as a callback from a clinic or delivery driver. Your normal rules apply again once it's off.

Does LineLayer block every private or hidden caller?

Not universally. Android's call-screening role — the mechanism LineLayer uses to apply rules before a call rings — doesn't receive calls whose presentation is restricted, unknown, unavailable, or payphone, so LineLayer can't guarantee blocking every private or hidden call. LineLayer's rules reliably apply to calls Android makes eligible for screening — most usefully, visible numbers that aren't in your contacts.

Can I make sure specific numbers always get through?

Yes. Numbers on your allow list are let through regardless of your other filtering rules.

Can I see why a call was blocked?

Yes. LineLayer's call history shows the reason a call was allowed or blocked, based on the rule that applied.

Does LineLayer process calls on a remote server?

LineLayer's call filtering is designed around local processing on your device, evaluated against the rules you set, rather than depending on a large shared database of phone numbers.

Where can I get LineLayer?

LineLayer is available for Android on Google Play.
